Arthur Stelwagen

     Arthur Raymond Stelwagen, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, MI passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015 in Mt. Pleasant with his family by his side.  Art was born on November 28, 1919 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Henry Dirk and Gertrude (Ros) Stelwagen.  On June 22, 1944, he married Irene Edith Edwards in Nash County, NC. 

     Art was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Army Air Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict.  When the Army and the Air Corps divided, Art was then in the U.S. Air Force.  He retired with twenty three years of service as a Master Sergeant.  He then went to work for Demmer Tool and Die in Lansing, MI as an electrician for many years.  Art enjoyed fishing, working in his garden, going out to eat after Sunday services along with many other endeavors.       Arthur is survived by his wife Irene, four children:  Recca Sewell of Lavonia, GA, Janice and Richard Harless of Mt. Pleasant, Ron Stelwagen of Aurora, CO and Dale and Vicky Stelwagen of Charlotte, MI. Also surviving are six grandchildren:  Christine and William Nienhuis of Sparta, MI, Joey and Becky Wade of West Olive, MI, Timothy Wade of Grand Rapids, MI, Clark Harless of Mt. Pleasant, Charles Ray Sewell, Jr. of Lavonia, GA and Cathy and John Coxx of  Lavonia, GA.  Also four great grandchildren: Michael and Matthew Wade, Andrew Murphy, Alexx Coxx, Alleigh Sewell and Charles Lane Sewell.  One brother, Richard Stelwagen of Jenison, MI, a sister Crystal Rooze of Grandville, MI and many nieces and nephews.  Art was preceded in death by both parents, a brother Henry, two sister-in-laws Rose Stelwagen and Shirley Stelwagen and a brother–in-law Gordon Rooze.

     Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. from the Rowley Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Bakker of Zion Lutheran Church officiating.  Interment will take place on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery located in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan.   Friends and family gathered on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of the service.  Memorial contributions have been suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.  Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
